TIGNON
TIGNON is a braided textile that reinterprets the historical headwrap as a symbol of empowerment and creative agency. Inspired by the Tignon Laws of 1786, which sought to regulate Black women’s appearance, this work transforms a tool of restriction into a medium of expression.
Through material experimentation and user interaction, the textile invites wearers to shape and style it themselves. The braided structure references both tradition and adaptability, allowing the piece to exist across multiple forms and uses. TIGNON reframes historical constraint as an opportunity for reclamation, positioning adornment as a site of identity and resistance.
